Future Consideration

Public Service Announcement for those graduating High School or for anyone who is considering their future: IT IS COMPLETELY OK TO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WHEN YOU "GROW UP." Now, this may not be popular among the parent group, but I promise you it will be ok.

I had no idea what I wanted to do. Tried college... nope. Tried pharmacy... nope. Finance... no. Healthcare... uh for sure no. Insurance... no no no. But all of those brought me here. A job not listed on any aptitude test. A job no kindergartner writes on their ‘about me’ paper. But it’s a job that I take pride in and find joy in every day. It fulfills my need to create and gives me space to exercise my urge to organize. I can make lists and use all kinds of office supplies (Office supplies are my love language). I get to talk to people and buy fireworks. I get to teach and lead. I get to travel and speak. Plan parties and events. I honestly get to do a little bit of each thing I love. And I get more time with my littles (best bonus ever)! I am certain that God saw a future need, combined several tasks and called it “church secretary.” Then He went to work carefully crafting ME with the ability and drive to learn each task He would ask of me. It isn't a job when it's a calling.

I say all this to say: Don't waste your life tied to a dream that isn't yours. If your answer to, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" doesn't spark a fire inside of you... then it isn't good enough. Try things. LOTS of things… and fail. Please for the love of all things holy, FAIL at something. It is totally acceptable. Dream... then dream bigger. Take pictures and videos –– even if nobody looks at them. Make something, even if no one buys it. Build a house... for a bird or a dog. Program a computer (or whatever computer people do). Seek GOD in each of those steps. Ask Him for fire and passion. You might just grow up to be a Church Secretary or a Worship Leader, maybe a Student Pastor. Or maybe you will stock shelves at Walmart (Organizers unite). Or maybe you take payments at the local courthouse. Or you will create an awesome new line of nail polish. Keep doing you until you find the job just for YOU.

God is so good. And has great plans for your life. Do not limit yourself to simple thinking. There is something special. Just. For. You. If what you do with your life isn’t encompassed by a relentless pursuit of Jesus, it will be futile at best. This isn’t about religion or even about ministry. It’s about turning over your future to the One who already holds it. It’s about considering something unconventional if God asks. It's about growing up in the best way possible, held in the palm of His hand. Oh sweet girl (or boy), I can’t wait for you to learn to see yourself the way God sees you!!
